Required Components and Policies
The following is a list of the required components of your Senior Project. All project components must be complete to satisfy the graduation requirement. Most of the components are also graded assignments in your English 12 class. All Senior Project Components are due in your English 12 class on the due date. Your Senior Project must connect to your field of study and include a community connection.
All Senior Project Components are due in your English 12 class on the due date. Late components will be accepted under the following conditions:
1.) There will be a 7 calendar day grace period following the due date. Components turned in during the grace period will be penalized 10% as graded for English 12.
2.) After the grace period has expired, you will receive a 0 for the component as assigned in English 12. However, you will still be required to complete the component as part of the Senior Project graduation requirement.
Community Connection Requirements
MHS Senior Project students are required to make a meaningful “community connection” during the course of their projects. For some projects this will be an almost automatic feature of the experience; in other cases, students will need to seek out a community resource/evaluator.
The following is a list of possible “community connections”:
1. A mentor for your project. A mentor is someone with expertise in your area who will work with you on an ongoing basis.
2. Attend a class or a workshop. This could be an extended class at a community college or center, or a single workshop at a place like Home Depot or Whole Foods.
3. Interview an expert, in person or possibly by phone or e-mail.
4. Attend an educational event or community meeting, such as a Women’s Health Fair, or a block watch meeting or a “meet-up” for your favorite political party or issue.
5. Job shadow – make arrangements to spend time watching someone do work relevant to your project.
Sorry…
1. You may not use relatives or MHS staff members as your “community connection”, but they can certainly assist you in making your connection.
2. Although we love libraries, a visit to your local library is not sufficient.
3. Movies, concerts, and other entertainment venues do not count as a community connection.
You will need to provide evidence of your community connection by filling out the appropriate form. You can do this at any time after your letter of intent has been accepted When your documentation/journal is due you will need to provide the evidence of your community connection. Your community connection form will need to be approved by your English 12 teacher and then it can be included as evidence of your project.
