Computer Technology Curriculum
My name is Mel Cooke and I am responsible for facilitating your child’s learning. I am also the Computer Technology Department Chair here at Meadowdale Middle School. I have been in the business of education since 1992 and my particular area of interest is the use of educational technologies. My desire is to allow your students to use their natural curiosity and creative instincts, in a technology rich classroom, to construct meaningful outcomes, or in other words, examples of their learning. Those outcomes may come in a variety of packages ranging from word processed documents to video presentations. My classroom is a hands-on, minds-on classroom where all students will be treated with individuality and respect.
It is my belief that to be successful in today’s technology driven economy students should be familiar and competent with a variety of technologies. By offering a variety of tools using “just in time” instruction your student will hopefully be fully engaged in the learning process.
Student achievement in my classroom is monitored and learning tasks are adjusted as necessary. Emphasis is placed on quality production. Students periodically assess their own work and are given options to improve it. Teacher assessment is twofold: daily in-class monitoring and I use of a grading guide (see curriculum link below). Students are evaluated on productivity, quality of work, initiative, listening to instruction, concept integration, classroom behavior, and keyboarding. In addition, 8th grade students have a final project in the form of a mini web site.
On a personal level I live in Kirkland with my son Ian who is now 12 years old. I have a daughter who is grown and married and two grandchildren. In the winter I go to the mountains as often as possible and love sliding down mountains on my snowboard. During summer I love to hang out at the beach, do mountain treks, bicycle, inline skate, fly kites and play frisbee.
