Highly Capable Program Mission Statement

As part of the Edmonds School District mission to enable to all students to achieve their full potential, the Elementary Highly Capable Program provides an academic setting that allows students to demonstrate:

• A capacity to learn with unusual depth
• A capacity to deal with increasing levels of abstraction
• An ability to make unusually connections
• A capacity for intense concentration
• An ability to learn quickly
• Creative production of products
• Mastery of basic knowledge and skills contained in district frameworks

To accomplish this, the Program provides:

• Opportunities for interactions with intellectual and interest group peers
• Acceleration through curriculum compacting
• Advanced training in critical thinking and research skills required in academic areas

This reporting system used the numbers 1-4 to indicate student progress toward meeting standards in each area.  For the elementary program, these numbers reflect recognition of the expectations embodied in the Mission Statement.

4.     Exemplary:  The student has provided extensive evidence of exceeding Challenge Program expectations for the reporting period.

3.     Proficient:  The student has provided sufficient evidence of meeting Challenge program expectations for the reporting period.

2.     Progressing:  The student has provided partial evidence of meeting Challenge Program expectations for the reporting period.

1.       Beginning:  The student has provided little or no evidence of meeting Challenge  Program expectations for the reporting period.
