BASS MARIMBA CONSTRUCTION PROJECT
The Bass Marimba Project is Complete!
Thanks to the hard work of several talented volunteers (Dan Marcus, Ed Payne and Jeff Payne), MDE now has two beautiful new instruments for everyone to play. Big thanks also go to Byron Wylie, the music educator from Cle Elum/Roslyn, who brought his 5th grade marimba group to perform at MDE a few years ago and inspired us all. After hearing this wonderful music and seeing how enthusiatic our MDE students were about the project, we decided to begin the process of exploring just how we here at MDE could work to create the instruments and offer our students an opportunity to participate in playing this wonderful African-influenced music. We commissioned Byron to make the bars, and throughout the entire process (beginning September 2004!), he has been incredibly supportive, giving us advice all along the way. This project was funded by the generosity of our volunteers as well as the generosity of the MDE community who purchased the all-school CD,"Born to Make Music", in the 2003/2004 school year. The proceeds from the CD made this marimba project possible. (The other half of the CD money paid for the 18 guitars that students from 2nd-6th grade are now playing!)
