MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS

Position Summary
The mentor teacher will provide expertise, ongoing support, and professional growth opportunities to enhance the skills and effectiveness of beginning certficated staff. Mentors will be expected to support one or two beginning certificated staff members for a period of one school year.

Required Qualifications:

Abilities:

  • Model effective teaching strategies
  • Work in a collaborative manner
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Manage time effectively

Knowledge:

  • of research-based curriculum, effective teaching, management, and assessment strategies
  • of Edmonds School District culture (Trust Agreement, Frameworks, state and local assessments, etc)

Demonstrated skills:

  • Professional involvement nad follow-through
  • Effective verbal and nonverbal communication
  • Interpersonal skills of caring, kindness, empathy, and understanding
  • Ablie to provide effective feedback

Experience:

  • Three or more years of recent, successful teaching
  • Experience as a certficated employee of Edmonds School District

Work Year: 2004-2005 School Year

Salary: Stipend estimated at $500 per beginning teacher

  • Stipend amounts contingent on funding level provided by the State Teacher Assistance Program Grant

Hours: Flexible (depending on need)

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise, ongoing support and professional growth opportunities to enhance the skills and effectiveness of beginning certificated teacher
  • Provide information and answer questions that relate to the unique culture of the building and/or job placement (grade level, content/specialty area)
  • Maintain a confidential relationship with beginning staff
  • Attend fall Mentor Orientation
  • eceive required training approved by PEC in coaching and teacher certificate standards
  • Meet and confer with beginning staff a minimum of every two weeks during the year
  • Commit to two observation experiences
  • Work with the building administrators, department heads, and district resource people to provide support and orientation to the new certificated staff
  • Be flexible and willing to take on new interns during the school year if the need arises
  • Participate in the annual evaluation of the induction program
