Grading Practices and Guideline

The Edmonds School District has made a commitment to students and families to provide clear, consistent, and current information regarding student growth and progress toward standards.

The journey to define our beliefs about grading and communicating student progress in a standards-referenced system began in 1998. An Elementary Reporting System Advisory Committee was established and included teachers and administrators. The team began learning about designing standards referenced systems and the role of grading student progress with external consultants, Dr. Bob Marzano and Ken O'Connor. The team also spent reviewed report cards from across Washington State and from across the country. The committee recommended a new progress report and consistent grading practices, which were field tested by twelve elementary schools in 1999. Throughout the field testing, teachers, students, and parents had multiple opportunities to provide input into the content and format of the progress report.

Based on the feedback from staff, students, and parents the following beliefs and practices about grading have guided the implementation of our elementary grading and reporting system.
