Course Description

Purpose: This course is designed for students beginning their Pre-International Baccalaureate studies while meeting the 9 th grade requirements in Geography. This course provides a broad view of the geography, history, political/ social/ economic structure, and culture of non-western regions of the world, thus enabling students to better understand their role as local, national and international students.

Content: The initial third of the course will provide students with a foundation of basic geographic skills and systems. Topics will include physical geography, political systems, economic systems and trade, studies of traditionally non-western regions of the world. These may include Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, East Asia, Eastern Europe, and South Asia (students will study ancient as well as modern issues of importance to each of these areas). There will be an emphasis on teaching the following essential skills for social studies: developing research skills, developing geography skills, developing technology skills, developing social participation and decision making, and developing critical thinking skills.

Learning Demonstrations: Learning will be demonstrated in a variety of ways such as objective and essay tests, essays, research papers, group discussions and presentations, outside readings and various project-based learning. Students will be expected to demonstrate depth of knowledge, critical thinking skills, and development as a self-directed learner. Work will be assessed according to International Baccalaureate standards as well as state and district essential learning benchmarks, including graduation portfolio requirements.
