Course Description

Purpose: This course is a one-year fine arts or social studies elective with the goal that students will gain an aesthetic understanding of painting, sculpture, architecture and other art media within their historical and cultural contexts. Students will learn to examine and analyze works of art critically and intelligently; students will also supplement their art historical knowledge with art projects. Students are strongly encouraged to take the May AP Examination, as many colleges and universities offer advanced placement and/or credit to students who have received a 4.0 or higher on a 5.0 scale on the exam.

Content: Students will study the following art historical periods: (1) Non-European artistic traditions such as Chinese, East Indian, African and Native American, (2) Ancient through Medieval art, including Prehistoric, Ancient Near eastern, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic, (3) Early Modern through 20 th century art, including Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Realistic, Impressionistic, through the Post-Impressionistic and Modern art movements.

Learning Demonstrations: Students will study art through slide presentations, on-line museum sources, Seattle area art museums, textbook readings, written primary documents, and video clips. Students will be expected to share their ideas and demonstrate their learning through class discussions, presentations, research projects, reflective essay writing, and exams.
