Course Description

This course is recommended for those students with advanced skills in and deep conceptual understanding of mathematical processes. Students pursuing and International Baccalaureate (IB) math endorsement should enroll in this course. This course if the fifth year of a sequence of integrated, standards-based mathematics courses. It is specially designed to help students prepare for the IB diploma. The course represents a departure from a skills-based curriculum in which skills are taught in isolation, towards a problem-based curriculum in which skills and concepts serve as tools for solving problems. Students will learn algebra and functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and discrete mathematics in real world contexts. Units of study include: 2-D and 3-D vectors, binomial theorem, polynomial and rational functions, trigonometric functions and identities, natural logarithms, and calculus. Students will demonstrate learning through class participation, in-class investigations, daily homework, projects, quizzes, tests, performance assessments, and written responses to complex problem situations (portfolio problems).
