Course Description |
Extended Integrated Mathematics is the first year of a three-year sequence of curses designed to teach the concepts and skills of Integrated Mathematics I and Integrated Mathematics II at a slower pace than other mathematics courses. As such it is recommended only for students who need extra support to successfully meet the new graduation requirements (which include completion of Integrated Math II, passing the WASL exam, and completion of two graduation performance tasks). This is an integrated, standards-based mathematics course designed to prepare students for college, careers, and daily life in a contemporary society. The course represents a departure from a skills-based curriculum, in which skills are taught in isolation, towards a problem-based curriculum where skills and concepts serve as tools for solving problems. Students will examine the interwoven concepts of algebra and functions, statistics and probability, geometry, and trigonometry, and discrete mathematics. These strands of mathematics are approached in units containing direct applications to real world scenarios. These units include focused attention on patterns in data, patterns of change, and linear and exponential models. Students are required to use a variety of problem solving strategies and to apply all concepts learned to new situations. The course requires students to read and communicate their solutions in written form and to work wit h peers in group settings. |
