Course Description |
Purpose: This course addresses academically oriented students who have well developed communication skills and a willingness to commit substantial time and effort to studies, during times when school is in session and when it is not. This class satisfied the United States literature requirement for graduation from high school. Credit in pre-IB English 9 and 10 is not a prerequisite, but participation in those classes gives students a "jump start" towards success in the IB classes. We urge students to enroll, concomitantly, in IB "Culture of the Americas" because, while the courses are not integrated, we have correlated the units of study, as much as possible, given the IB Organization guidelines. In order to receive IB credit on their transcript, the student is required to complete all IBO course requirements including IBO LIterature Orals (Internal Assessment), and complete the Official IBO fee paid exam or non-fee teacher administered IB exam. The class satisfies graduation requirements in senior communications and prepares students for certificate assessment by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Content: Internationally-recognized works of literature, selected from IBO lists, for the basis of the curriculum. First semester will be a detailed study of selected poets, two Shakespearean plays and one author from prescribed list. Second semester will focus on 20th Century drama and works will be selected from IB prescribed list. Students should expect to maintain detailed reading notebooks on works studied in class and those read outside of class, for use in written and oral analyses/presentations. Learning Demonstrations: Assessment will include traditional tests, projects, presentations, compositions written in restricted and non-restricted situations, research-based assignments, and observations, according to IBO guidelines. Students will complete two world literature papers and sit for examinations administered and evaluated by the IBO or a released exam internally assessed if not seeking an IB certificate. |
