Read 1000 of one of several books for .25 elective credit.
1300 pages for .34 elective credit.
Keep a daily log of your reading.
Each log should include besides the title and the author of the book(s):
date, from what page to what page read
summary of those pages read
reaction/comment/question/vocabulary question & answer to go with each summary.
Your log should be in columns as the following:

ACCELERATED/INDEPENDENT READING CONTRACT .25/.34 ENGLISH OR ELECTIVE CREDIT
 
READ, WRITE, TEST, SHARE
 
1. READ
Take the 10 minute S.T.A.R. so we know your reading level. Read one or several books from the approved list to total approximately 44/ 50 points or _____ as designated by teacher.
2. WRITE
Write a book report (see sample; use expository or persuasive rubric). or Write a review/critique (see sample; use expository or persuasive rubric). or Write a literary analysis of the book. (e.g. comparing the main characters, relating the theme to present-day life, explaining the significance of the setting' use the expository or persuasive rubric).
3. TEST
Take a test (paper or computer); see Lorraine in the library.
4. SHARE
Share your book with your Family or class--
describe the plot and characters to the class
Try to interest someone in reading your book.
Or create a model or diorama of a major scene in the book (include title and author).
Or draw several scenes from the book and mount on poster board (include title and author).
Or create a children's version of the book.

HISTORY THROUGH FICTION-- History or English .25/34 credit Lorraine Competency #15 Read, analyze, interpret, written materials. Competency #3 Gather, select, organize, evaluate, and use information
 
Students will choose from a list of books designated as historical fiction or from the biography or historical collection.
 
One or two books will be read depending on length of the book. Student will keep a log or write a 3-page summary of the book. After reading the book, the student will choose 1 activity from the activity list below in consultation with the teacher:
 
1. Research one of the major historical characters in the book, then write a biographical essay of the person including your opinion of his/her impact on history. (3 pages typed)
 
2. With the help of the instructor, compile a list of 3 or more questions which arise in the book. Research and answer one of the questions. (e.g. From reading Here Be Dragons, what do historians say actually happened to Arthur, King Richard the Lionheart's nephew?)
 
3. Draw a series of pictures depicting the major scenes in the book, including a written or oral explanation of the pictures.
 
4. Create a model of a scene in the book, including a written or oral explanation of the model.
 
5. Research a major event in the book. Describe the event in detail including a discussion of the event's significance. (E.g. based on a Tony Hillerman mystery, research Native-American rituals or the native American's loss of sovereignty or the enslavement of Native Americans.)
 
6. Create a child's picture-book version of the major historical event in the novel. (See EC 398.2 H Saint George and the Dragon )
 
7. Read a biography book about one of the main characters in the historical fiction. Keep a log of your reading. Write a paper explaining the major differences between the historical fiction and the biography's view of the character.
 
8. Other options may be negotiated.

To get .34 elective credit per trimester, I must--
1. Put away correctly the books for my shelves. Shelves are graded weekly or biweekly--5 incorrect books = A-, 10 incorrect = B, etc.
 
2. Keep my shelves in order, straighten, and dusted.
 
3. Carry out special assignments as indicated in the planbook. These assignments are graded on thoroughness, neatness, and actual completion. I get 10 points for each day I am in the library and doing work for Lorraine
 
4. Recognize that my attendance is crucial for my credit, and that Lorraine depends on me to be in the library daily.
 
5. Recognize that after I have taken 3 absences in a trimester I will make up any missed time by working before/after school or at lunchtime and that 85% attendance is required for credit.
