Media: Selecting a yearbook theme.

  1. Read: First of all, what is school spirit? (Not necessary to read any of the linked items for the page, only the main body of the web page titled "The importance of school spirit".)
  2. Can you think of one way to promote SCHOOL SPIRIT at Madrona? This question was on the Madrona Media yearbook staff & broadcast team 2007-08 application. Read the list of suggestions (below) generated by students.
o Spirit Suggestions
o Memories day
o Mascot for games (suit)
o Pictures of a few kids who demonstrated spirit (in the MMB & YrBk)
o Encourage students to participate in spirit week by having teachers dress up
o New spirit days for spirit week
o Anchors dress theme of spirit week day

o School chant or song (many votes)

  1. With your partner, BRAINSTORM additional items for the list. Title the bullet list "School spirit ides". Create your list in MS Word Notebook.
  2. Switch partners.
  3. Share spirit ideas generated with previous partner. Add new (good) ideas to the list from other partner. Use strikethroughs to cross out bad and so-so ideas.
  4. Explore the yearbook theme links below. (Right or ctrl + click the hyperlink to open the page in a new tab so you can easily come back to this page.
  5. Make a list of your favorite ideas. (Copy/paste to Word Notebook). This is not a race to copy/paste as many themes as possible, but rather select a few that you LIKE and can actually envision incorporating throughout the book.
  6. Print one copy of the list.

  1. Switch partners. Partner that moves takes list. Again, share theme ideas. Compile lists, strike-out bad ones, add the good ones to create one master list.
  2. Brainstorm ideas. These can be cover sketches, slogans to incorporate the theme, descriptions of how the theme will be clearly illustrated throughout the book AND yearbook dvd & MMB.
