Media Class

Video Project: Classroom/Advisory Featured Video

Primary Application: iMovie

Possible Secondary Applications: iPhoto, iTunes, Photoshop, Powerpoint, QuickTime, GarageBand

Objective: Create a 2 minute video featuring selected center or middle that gives a enthusiastic introduction to the center , the teachers and the students.

Description: Create a two-three minute video about your assigned class that will be aired on the MMB, included in the yearbook DVD and possibly compiled into an "About Madrona" DVD to be used for monthly parent tours. You may shoot a documentary, a music video, an info-merical, or a combination of these. The idea is to create a video that showcases this class in an informative and fun way. What will students want to see and be reminded of not only weeks or months later when the segment is aired on the broadcast, but years later when they dig into their box of mementos to retrieve their (DVD) yearbook. How can your images, video clips, captions and text best capture the essence of the class?

Tips: (in class lesson)

  1. Shoot more pictures and video! It's hard to gather ample footage and enough variety in a one-hour shoot. Go back at different times during the day and follow students to different venues.
  2. Ask for photos from the classroom teacher that may have been taken earlier in the year, on a field trip, etc.
  3. Make appointments for interviews to gather more information. Use multiple sources when gathering information-Teachers and several students. Take notes. - get names of sources. Ask how to spell names. You will be writing copy for the yearbook about this class and you can use the SAME information!
  4. USE A TRIPOD whenever possible. USE A line-in MICROPHONE whenever possible. We have shotgun mic in addition to two wireless mic systems and a voice recorder.
  5. Extract audio or adjust levels when necessary.
  6. Limit "Ken Burns" effect on still images.
  7. Use effects only if it helps convey your message about the center. This would also apply to reverse clip and speed adjustments.
  8. Don't check "use Quicktime margins" when adding titles.
  9. Create your own custom JPEGS to import as a still image.
  10. Create still clips from video if necessary. (Often useful when adding a transition/title to a clip without a lead at beginning or end)
  11. OBEY copyright law! You probably don't have time to obtain permission to utilize copyright music, so use public domain music. Music should not be the focus of this video anyway, it should serve only as a backdrop for the production.
  12. Make text as large as possible. Use the "multiple" feature on the title to make additional lines rather than squeezing all text onto one line.
  13. ASK if you are frustrated or wish the software could do something more. I may be able to figure out a solution for you.
  14. Edit, edit, edit! Don't include it just because it's on film. We want QUALITY over QUANTITY!
  15. Remember your audience... not only now but years from now... YOU HAVE AN IMPORTANT JOB!
