Learning about various file formats, sending attached files
	Basic: Utilizing the draw module in AppleWorks, create a unique drawing of anything you desire. Save as a jpeg and send as attachment to yourself and record what program opened the drawing. Share this file with your instructor and a peer via email. Advanced: Utilize a combination of software applications to create a unique image. Continue as indicated above.

STEP BY STEP:

• Launch Appleworks. Choose the Drawing Module from the starting points panel.
• Create any type of picture object you desire utilizing the draw tools in Appleworks.
• Use all features of the draw module to make your drawing as unique and complex as possible. (Transform, rotate, arrange, group, etc.)
• If you are attempting the Advanced or want to try to get a "4", try combining a variety of programs to make your final image. For instance make WordArt using MS Word, select the WordArt, then copy and paste into AppleWorks. Use Photoshop Filters to apply an effect to your Appleworks JPEG, upload your image to an on-line utility to warp/distort your creation, use Image Tricks for a portion of the projects. Remember you can capture anything on your screen and copy paste the selection OR even use GRAB, a program located in the Application/Utilities folder to capture to a TIFF or JPEG) Recollect all the software that was previewed by students the first week of class. But here's a hint: Tux Paint is probably too simplistic!
• Save your drawing a final time.(in standard Appleworks format.)
• Save your drawing again, but change the file format JPEG [QT]. When naming your file, give it a brief descriptive name with no spaces or unusual characters. Be sure to add the ".JPG" suffix. Example: monicasdrawing.jpg
• Launch your web browser and compose an email message to yourself. By sure to include "Computer Illustration" in the subject line. (You'll need this for forwarding your message.)
• Attach the .jpg file to the message and send it off.
• Prior to the next class:
  • Retreive the message to yourself and open the attached jpg file. Discover what application on your computer (or any other computer you have access to) opens your jpg file. Forward the message to me at edwardsmo@edmonds.wednet.edu and compose a brief message that states what application/program opened your file. Also, be sure you include your name in the body of the email, ie: sign your message. Don't assume I can figure out who sent the email just from the email address.
  • If you do not have a computer with email access at home, this assignment can be done on any networked computer in our building (other than lab computers) or at your local library, friend's house, etc.
  • REMINDER: Beginning with the next class we will be utilizing the list of names, address, phone numbers (home and cell), email address and birthdays you should have begun collecting. Ultimately you will need 15 contacts. This information will not be distributed or collected by me, other than to check your assignment completion so you can be assurred no junk mail or phone calls will result from gathering this information unless you choose to distribute it! (ie: forthcoming survey you will create.)

  4	Picture is an identifiable object & a unique creation that indicates fluency with draw modulels and/or other software AND reflects effort and creativity. - Email sent to instructor as a forward from appropriate computer. - cc'd to peer - subject line -signature - message in body that indicates how the image was made (what apps were used), attached JPG and indicates program on home computer that opened JPG -attached file in correct jpg format and titled "namesdrawing.jpg" where "name" is your name.
  3	All of the above, but picture may lack some creativity or effort or fluency with draw modulels and/or other software.
  2	Not all required elements (see 4) completed.
  1	One of two requirements from above completed.
