Principal’s Place April 2008

Dear Parents,

WASL Assessments in April : During the weeks from April 14 to May 2 all of our 3rd through 6th grade students will be taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). Our schedule for each grade level’s testing is included in this newsletter. Parents often ask what they can do to support their children during this testing period. Our advice it to do all of the same things that you would normally do to help assure your children’s success in school. Create routines that give your children enough sleep – elementary age students need between 10 and 12 hours each night. Make sure they leave for school with a good and healthy breakfast in their tummies. Ask them about their school day. Ask them to share specific things they learned. Support and praise the work they do at school and at home.

Summer Parking Lot Construction : As part of the Capital Projects Bond passed by voters in 2004, our traffic and parking areas will be totally reconfigured during this summer’s break. The changes made to our parking lot will add about 20 new parking slots and separate the busses from the car pick up/drop off traffic. We will no longer have our students line up in the courtyard and lead them across the driveway to their busses. If you are interested in learning more specific information about this project, please join us on Thursday, April 17 th at our PFT general meeting. A diagram showing changes and how it will impact you and your children will also come in future newsletters.

New Playground Equipment: Our new bus circle will be created in the area that is now our lower playground. The monkey and horizontal bars that are original from when the school was first built in the early sixties will be removed. New equipment will be placed in our upper play area. This presents us with an exciting opportunity to have play toys in our upper field area. We will be working with our PFT and students to choose the best equipment for our kids.

Peace Days : Our students know how to problem solve conflicts! We have achieved 71 Peace Days so far this school year. A Peace Day happens whenever we have a school day that is free of any physical or emotional violence. Throughout the year, each classroom works on strategies to mediate conflicts and support each other to prevent bullying at our school.
