General Guidelines& Behavioral Plan

Behavior Expectations

1. Language and actions will be respectful of self, others, property, and environment.

2. Weapons, real and toy, will not be tolerated. Senate Bill 5307 prohibits firearms and weapons on school premises. The school board policy specifically requires the immediate expulsion of any student who carries a gun on campus. This policy extends this responsibility to include even toy guns when they are brought to school.

3. Walking will be the means of travel in and around the buildings, on sidewalks. Running is encouraged on the playground.

4. Students are required to dress appropriately for a learning environment. Students that arrive for school dressed inappropriately will be asked to change clothing.

5. No gum at school.

6. Hands, feet and implements will be kept off of wall surfaces.

7. Litter will be thrown in trash containers.

Dress Code

- Hats/hoods/bandanas are to be removed in all common indoor areas.

- Clothing that portrays gangs, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, violence, sex or inappropriate language shall not be worn.

- Skirts and shorts must extend past fingertips of straightened arms at side.

- Midriff (torsos) should be covered at all times.

- No underwear should be showing-including sports bras.

- Chains attached to clothing are inappropriate for school dress.

***Adults are expected to dress in a manner that is appropriate for an educational setting.

Toys at School

Games, electronic toys and trading cards should be kept at home. They are not allowed on the school bus or in the classroom. Students risk losing or damaging these items by bringing them to school

Assemblies

Students are expected to enter the gym quietly and participate with good audience manners.

Restroom

Students are expected to follow their own classroom policies concerning restroom use. In addition, students are expected to go about their business in a timely manner and to follow good health practices.

Halls and Walkways

The halls and walkways will be a safe environment where people interact responsibly and respectfully. Students are asked to walk in a quiet and calm manner and to walk to the right side of the hallway so that others may pass easily. Students are expected to have permission to be in halls and walkways and have a pass from their teacher.

Lunch

Students will eat in a courteous and responsible manner that maintains a pleasant and clean environment. Students should walk to and from the lunch area quietly and calmly. Students will use quiet voices and keep hands, feet and food items to themselves during the course of lunch. Adult permission is required before leaving their seat.

Rainy Day Recess

Students are sent out to play unless the weather is extreme. When rainy day recess is called students are expected to work and play quietly in their own classrooms. Adult permission is required before leaving the classroom.

Playground

To ensure the safety of all students, the following guidelines should be followed on the playground:

- Keep hands and feet to yourself

- Play respectfully with others

- No name-calling

- Remain in designated play areas

- Obtain permission from an adult before leaving the playground

- Leave rocks, bark, sticks, and/or other dangerous objects on the ground

- Play fighting is not allowed

- Food, gum and beverages are not allowed

- No playground balls smaller than tennis balls are allowed

- No electronic items or trading cards are allowed on the playground

Arrival and Departure

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:45 AM due to limited supervision before school. Students enter the school property via sidewalks and crosswalks monitored by student patrols. No students should cross the parking lot driveways outside marked crosswalks or jaywalk on any street surrounding the school.

Upon arrival, students should immediately proceed to their designated classroom area and line up quietly or to the breakfast area located in the gym. Students should not loiter anywhere on school grounds or outside the property. No playing in the courtyards or playgrounds is allowed before school.

Bus Transportation

Students who ride a bus shall:

1. follow bus driver’s instructions without arguing.

2. allow all others to be seated swiftly and never refuse a seat to a fellow student.

3. be respectful and responsible while waiting for a bus.

4. talk in a normal voice and never yell, scream or use bad language.

5. use their assigned mode of transportation unless a written request for a change is sent by their parent/guardian. Students will not alternate modes by their choice.

Dismissal

Students should leave for home promptly at 3:30 PM dismissal, and not loiter on the property. Dismissal routes should include sidewalks and crosswalks monitored by adult and student patrols. No students should cross parking lot driveways outside marked crosswalks or jaywalk on any street surrounding the school. Students and parents should be aware that school conduct rules apply until children reach their homes.

LWI asks that parents and students make after school plans before the school day begins as students are not permitted to use telephones to alter after school plans once they arrive.

Parent Drop-off and Pick-up

The before and after school parent pick-up area is located on the playground near 44th Ave W. Parents, please use caution when arriving and departing from this busy location.

Bike Riding

1. Students must wear a fastened helmet.

2. Students must own a bike lock.

3. Students must follow standard bike safety rules.

4. Students must walk alongside the bike when on campus.

Parent Visitations

The safety of all students is a paramount concern to LWE staff. For this reason, we ask that all parents sign in at the office and wear a LWI button when visiting and volunteering at school. Thank you for adhering to this important safety precaution.

Together, we can make a difference in the future of our children!

Behavior Action Plan (BAP): Repeated or serious misbehavior warrants the completion of a Behavior Action Plan. The BAP form requires that a student develop better alternatives to the choice of action that caused a problem.

BAPs are often sent home to be reviewed by the parent and discussed with the student. If a student receives a frequent number of BAPs in a short time, a conference with the principal will be scheduled.

Behavior Action Plan (BAP)

Repeated or serious misbehavior warrants the completion of a Behavior Action Plan. The BAP form requires that a student develop better alternatives to the choices of action that caused the problem.

BAPs are often sent home to be reviewed by the parent and discussed with the student. If a student receives a frequent number of BAPs in a short time, a conference with the principal will be scheduled.

Resolution

The Resolution Coordinator meets with students to resolve issues concerning BAPs during the lunch/recess period. The staff member will help the student develop an alternate plan to prevent future misbehavior and to discuss possible consequences for that behavior.
