Ancient Music!

Students continue improvisation and composition. Keyboards and percussion ensemble is an important element of sixth grade music. Students integrate with six grade social studies by learning about music in ancient civilizations.

Curriculum lists the critical elements a sixth grader is expected to learn during their year in music. Report Cards and Assessment shows in detail what skills each sixth grader is assessed for their report card.

Curriculum

Demonstrates an understanding of musical styles by identifying and comparing styles from various periods and cultures.

Recognizes the application of music skills and knowledge with other subject areas.

Creates and performs music using standard notation. Experiences, explores, reads, listens to, identifies and performs 1) Rhythm: duple meter, note/rest values of quarter, half, whole, 2 connected eighth notes, dotted half note, 4 connected sixteenth notes. 2) Form: D.C. al fine, ABA. 3) Melody: line and space notes of the treble clef.

Rehearses and practices with teacher guidance.

Identifies music problems and solutions.

Revises own composition through reflective listening and teacher guidance.

Self-evaluates for quality.

Uses teacher critique and observation to improve own work.

 

Report Cards and Assessment

The following items will be assessed on the progress report.

Demonstrates understanding of music in various cultures: to meet standard student will integrate music into his/her classroom country report by including 1) a recorded sample from selected country 2) provide two or more instrument samples from selected county. Also, complete a written assessment that consists of matching 15 sound samples to their geographic area of origin.

Understands music concepts: student demonstrates ability to read and write standard notation, and creates own work using standard notation.

Effort: to meet standard the student will consistently follow teacher directions and appropriately participate in music class.
