First graders come to music twice weekly. They continue to develop their singing voice and ability to show a steady beat.

Curriculum lists the critical elements a first grader is expected to learn during their year in music. Report Cards and Assessment shows in detail what skills each first grader is assessed for their report card.

Curriculum

Demonstrate beat awareness by experiencing, exploring, listening to and performing steady beat. Utilize music for movement by showing steady beat.

Demonstrate music concepts of High/Low, Steps/Skips by experiencing, exploring, reading, listening to, identifying and performing melodic contour (High/Low, Step/Skip).

Listen and respond to music.

Rehearse and practice with teacher guidance and direction, demonstrating focus, concentration, active listening, appropriate participation and cooperation.

 

Report Cards and Assessment

The following items will be assessed on the progress report.

Develops music skills and techniques: as an example, to meet standard the student will use movement to independently demonstrate melodic contour in each of the following tasks: singing a simple, 8 beat song; showing melodic contour to an 8 beat external source.

Understands music concepts: as an example, to meet standard the student will independently match 8 steady beats from an external source in each of the following tasks: locomotor and non-locomotor movement, bilateral body percussion, singing, playing non-pitched percussion, and rhythmic speech.

Effort: to meet standard the student will consistently follow teacher directions and appropriately participate in music class.
