Lynndale Family Read Aloud Challenge

Lynndale Library challenges students and families to read aloud the past winners of children's choice awards listed below (as well as books on Jim Trelease's list of read alouds or maybe a favorite chapter book you enjoyed as a child).   These books are available at the Lynndale Library and the Lynnwood Public Library in print form and many are also available on CD.   Listening to a book as a family on CD is a great way to share award-winning literature while increasing our student's literacy.   Listen while riding in the car, listen while doing the dishes, listen at bedtime, and/or listen whenever you have access to a CD player.

Research shows that having books read aloud, whether from a live person or a book on CD, increases reading comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency, reading readiness and motivation to read.   So by taking this challenge you will enrich your family's time together as well as the benefits to their reading skills.

The titles listed below are books that have won awards voted on by children.   You will probably recognize many of the titles and/or authors. These are suggestions of read alouds, other lists created by Jim Trelease may be found on his website at: http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/

While this challenge has it own intrinsic reward the library will be recognizing and rewarding challengers who reach certain levels.   Rewards will be given to students after families read two books as a family.   There is a sign up chart in the library to show your family's progress.   All the library asks is that you respond to the book in a journal by selecting a reading response question and write the response on one page in the journal. At the top of each response page please put   the title, author, and the year published. Parents must initial the response page by the title.

Response Questions (just respond to one for each book read)

  1. Are there any connections between this book and your own life?   What?
  2. Would you like to be like the main character?   Why or Why not?
  3. What makes you wonder in this book?
  4. What are some of the questions you have/had with this book?   Write down your list of questions and any answers you found.
  5. What are your favorite lines or quotes ?    Copy them into your journal and tell why you like them.
  6. What do you know now that you didn't know before reading the book?
  7. Would you like to read more books by this author?   Why?   Or Why not?
  8. If you could change the ending of the book, what would you do?   Why?

Every student of a family who returns a response journal (if you need a journal call Mrs. Galante) with at least 5 books read as a family by May 8 th will be invited to a year-end party to celebrate the great stories and their commitment to reading aloud as a family. You do not need to come on Thursday to take the Family Read Aloud Challenge.   Questions?   Call Mrs. Galante at 425-431-2756

On Thursday, November 15th, at 6:30pm in the library, we will be watching a video produced by Jim Trelease on the value of reading aloud to our children.   Books lists will be available as well as an opportunity to meet the Lynnwood Public librarian and see what services the public library offers to families. (see attached notice).

If you want to check out the Jim Trelease Video please see Mrs. Galante or call her at 425-431-2756
