WASL RESULTS

Overall Hazelwood WASL scores Show Mixed Results.

Success is made in targeted areas!!!

Last year’s 4th grade students, who took the statewide assessment known as the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning), improved in many areas and revealed some areas that can be improved upon.  Our 5th graders took the Science WASL.  Our 3rd and 6th graders took pilot versions of the WASL with results not released.   We use assessment results to compose our annual School Improvement Plan.

Our 4th grade Reading scores went up to 77% of our students at standard.  Our fluency and accuracy rates were very high and comprehension of fiction literature was high.  We will continue to work with children in the comprehension of non-fiction works.

In Mathematics 49% of our 4th grader students were at standard. We are working hard with the district to improve the number of students at standard in math, particularly in the strand of number sense.  Our students continued to improve in the processes of mathematics:  communication, application, and problem solving.

In Writing, 55% of our 4th graders achieved at or above standard.  We continued to excel in the conventions of writing and are working hard to help students do better at the style, content, and organization of writing.

This was the second year that 5th graders were administered the state Science WASL.  43% of our students were at standard on this statewide assessment.  This is nearly 10% more than the previous year.

We will continue to use all assessments to communicate with students and parents about academic achievement and to inform our instruction to better assist students in their learning.  This year in our state, all students from 3rd through 8th grade and also in 10th grade will take the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in the mo nth of April.  We are confident that all of our students can learn.  Assessments like the WASL are only one measure that we use to better determine how well they’re learning.  As we all know, there’s a great deal more to learning than standardized tests.
