Making a Positive Difference... words we live by.

Character education defines nearly everything we do here at Hilltop Elementary. Here is an overview of the concept.

Core Virtues for 2007-2008 will be posted soon. Here is what we worked on last year.

September - Positive Attitude / Self-Image
October - Cooperation (tolerance, citizenship, acceptance)
November - Perseverance (fortitude, goal setting)
December - Gratitude / Thankfulness (appreciation)
January - Courage
February - Caring / Kindness (service, empathy, citizenship)
March - Self-control / Good Judgment (delayed gratification, patience)
April - Honesty / Integrity
May - Justice / Fairness

"It is character that will conquer materialism, demonstrate respect for life and property, and stem the tide of violence in our land. And it is character that will search for truth and demand diligent scholarship."

The Window Room
is a support program for all staff and students at Hilltop Elementary. It is a very important part of our character education efforts.

The purpose of the Window Room is to provide a comfortable space away from the classroom (which is not the main office area) where students may go to work out problems as they arise. There is an adult available to assist the students.  The focus is on problem-solving and making/teaching appropriate choices, not punishment.  Students come at their request and also as referred by staff.  This space is also offered as an alternative to recess.  The expectations for student behavior are the same in the Window Room as in other places in the school:  (1) treat others with respect; (2) act in ways that are safe (will not hurt others or property).  The development of good character in children is encouraged when caring adults ask them to reflect on their behavior and then choose to act in ways  that help others, not hurt them.  The Window Room is a place where we reinforce the teaching of respect, responsibility, and the supporting values, such as honesty, kindness, and caring as a part of everything we do.

The following list gives examples of the kinds of services provided in the Window Room:

Quiet Work Space
Positive Reinforcement
Emotional Support
Social Problem-Solving
Regroup Time
Alternative Recess
