PTO Fundraising
The PTO creates its budget based on Fundraising. Fundraising is a way we can financially support the Cedar Way Community. Funds raised go directly into our general budget. At times, we may have special fundraisers for a specifically designated purpose beyond the main fundraiser at the beginning of the year. For example, a couple of years ago, the PTO held a fundraiser to purchase the Kindergarten playground equipment. Please note that there are also fundraisers which are not run by the PTO. Sometimes an individual grade or classroom will choose to have a fundraiser to raise funds for their own needs.
PTO fundraising currently comprises:
Walkathon
The 4th Annual Cedar Way PTO Walkathon is coming up on September 20th from 1-2:30pm. This is the school’s main fundraiser of the year and a great way to get everyone involved. Pledge forms and information went home on Tuesday, September 11th. More information will be coming out next week. If you would like to get involved please contact a PTO Board Member at cedarwaypto@yahoo.com or voicemail 425-431-1570.
Albertsons Preferred Customer Cards. Albertsons has a Community Partners program where consumers may link their Albertsons cards with our Member number. PTO then receives a percentage of the sales when the card is used. To participate, you will need an Albertson’s Preferred Customer Card (you probably already have one). Just take your card to the cashier at Albertson’s and ask them to connect it to organization # 490001076881 - the Cedar Way PTO. Or you may also choose to connect your Albertson’s card to the PTO yourself at
www.albertsons.com. Once you are on their site, click on "In the community". Then click on the "login or register" link. Input your Preferred Savings card number and then click on "My Account". Albertson’s will then donate a percentage of sales from registered card-members to our PTO.Target Visa. Target stores have a program called "Take Charge of Education." Sign up for a Target Visa and Target will donate a percentage of sales placed on their Visa card to Cedar Way PTO. Sign up for a Target Visa at one of their stores or online at
www.target.com. Our designated school identification number is 105414.Verizon Long Distance. Verizon sponsors "Extra Credit for Schools". If you have a long distance plan through Verizon on your residential land line, it may qualify to give Cedar Way PTO funds. New and existing customers can request Cedar Way be designated by calling 1-877-927-3348.
SCRIP*. SCRIP is a program where we can purchase gift certificates to some of our favorite stores and restaurants and Cedar Way then receives a percentage back from that order. Some places we may order gift certificates from through Scrip are: Albertsons, Fred Meyer, Buca Di Beppo, KFC, Pizza Hut, Outback Steakhouse, Blockbuster, Regal Cinemas, Barnes and Noble, Bon Macy’s, Gap, Home Depot, Lowes, and Sky Nursery. Frequently Asked Questions about the Cedar Way Parent Teacher Organization
What is the PTO?
The Cedar Way Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an organization made up of parents, teachers and staff and community members who are dedicated to creating a community focused on your child’s school. Because your child spends at least 6 hours every day at school, the PTO wants to create the best climate for your child’s education and socialization
.
How does the PTO work?
The PTO meets approximately every other month at the school library. Meetings are intended to run only one hour. At the meeting, all issues are discussed and events and budget decisions are made. Those people who choose to attend these meetings have final say in how the PTO spends its time and resources. The PTO has an Executive Board which steers most meetings. However, if there is something important you would like to see done, or done away with, the meeting is open to any and all suggestions. For example, suppose you would like the PTO to purchase a "Widget." Someone must propose the purchase of a Widget at the meeting. Then a discussion will take place, discussing the pros and cons of purchasing a Widget. Then those in attendance will vote to approve or disapprove the proposal. But, if no one makes a proposal, nothing can be done.
Where does the PTO budget come from?
The PTO budget is created through fundraisers. The majority of the budget comes from the fall fundraiser. This year we have chosen to hold a Walkathon. A Walkathon will not only support the budget, but also will encourage a healthful activity for our kids. Additionally there are other programs which donate to the Cedar Way PTO. Some are: Albertson’s - use your Albertson’s card when you shop and be sure it is linked into their Community Partners Program designating Cedar Way as the partner school (the CWE number is 490001076881). You may link CWE as you Partner either on the web (see Fundraising page) or at your local Albertsons; Target Visa - using your Target Visa and having Cedar Way designated as your school of choice; signing up with Verizon long distance and designating Cedar Way as your school of choice; and opening a Washington Mutual account and designating Cedar Way as the partner school. Check the Cedar Way website,
http://school.edmonds.wednet.edu/cwe.
How is the budget spent?
Nearly half of the budget is allotted to teachers and para-educators. Presently, each teacher receives a $450 budget to be spent on their classroom. This often funds buses for field trips, expenses for science projects, new books for class libraries, or in any other manner the teacher sees fit. At $450 per teacher, Cedar Way PTO provides their educators approximately 9 times the amount of many other PTO/PTA’s. Additionally, para-educators each receive $85 to spend on their teaching needs. Much of the rest of the budget is spent on assemblies, Departments (Music, P.E., and Library), Family Night Events, (eg. Fall Harvest), Patrol and Conflict (the crossing guards who help children cross the street safely), and scholarships for instruments and field trips, and also NSF checks fees (the bank imposes a fee for having deposited a check that bounced). A copy of the current budget is provided and voted on at every PTO meeting. Alterations to the budget are welcome, but someone must propose the change and the proposal must be passed at the meeting.
If I can’t make the meeting, how else can I participate?
The PTO is always looking for an infusion of people, ideas and energy. The PTO welcomes participation with the events it sponsors. And new ideas are always important to the growth of our community so please make your thoughts known. We hope you can make the meetings, but if you cannot, please feel free to contact anyone on the PTO Board. Taira Rink, Cedar Way PTO Co-President and a familiar face to all those at school, is available at 425-431-7864. Or you may prefer to send an email to:
CedarWayPTO@yahoo.com. Phone messages may be left on the PTO message line: 425-432-1570. Or, feel free to speak with the folks at the front office of the school who will happily pass on your interest, ideas, and information to the Board.
