7th Grade COUNSELORS’ CORNER…………………….…Mr. Demick

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rob Demick and I am the Counselor replacement for Debbie Lasky-Fink while she is on leave. I feel privileged to be part of such a great community and wonderful team! Also, I look forward to working with the seventh graders surrounding their academic, emotional and social well-being. Twelve years of experience as a Middle School Counselor allows me to share insights and wisdom I have gained and partnering with families makes this job one of the best in the world!

As you know, growing and learning go hand in hand, and at no age is this more apparent than seventh grade! For example, middle school kids love to have a lot of authority to make decisions concerning their homework completion and other tasks, but little responsibility when things don’t go as planned. At BTMS there are multiple ways a student can practice great academic habits while maintaining his or her independence. For one, the online Skyward System allows families to check the progress, or lack thereof for a student and allows the seventh grader to monitor his or her education. Other safe ―tools‖ for building autonomy in your child are the daily planner, email correspondence with teachers (either student generated or yourself), visiting with the Counselor to individualize organizational methods, and having him or her go to study club for help with any subject.

Once again, I want to state that it is a pleasure to be at BTMS and I look forward to meeting more students and families during my time here. Please know that I am available via phone, email and definitely in-person. Here’s to a great year, and go Bulldogs!!!

8th Grade COUNSELORS’ CORNER…………………..……Ms. Daniels

We are off to an energetic beginning to the 2009-2010 school year! As your students are ―getting into the swing‖ of 8th grade, we are preparing the activities and information to help them transition into high school. As they attempt to sort out the complexities of friendships and other relationships, we are trying to help them make sense of the academic expectations and realities that may help them be more successful in the future.

Progress reports will be distributed to all students on 10/22 in 1st period. Please review these grades with your students as they bring them home. Family access codes were mailed previously, so you are able to view your students’ grades, assignments, and progress on the Skyward system. Study Club is always a great option for extra help!

Most BTMS students will be attending Mountlake Terrace High School next year. We will begin the presentations regarding registration and high school requirements in February. If your student is attending another District high school, their information will also be available. If you and your student are considering any advanced programs for next year (IB, Honors, AP, etc), please consult the District website. From Parents and Community, click on Other Educational Resources, then find the program that is of interest. Information for IB may be found on the Edmonds/Woodway HS website. There will be an IB information meeting on November 5th at 7:00 pm at EWHS Great Hall. Please note there will be no other evening meetings concerning advanced programs this year.

We appreciate all you do at home---checking grades, monitoring planners, helping your children balance social and academic time, and keeping them involved in a variety of activities both in and out of school. Many students are self-starters and can remain motivated on their own; others need more guidance from the adults in their lives. Please do call and let us know if there are ways we can assist you and your student.

STUDENT SUCCESS

Brier Terrace Middle School operates on the belief that all students can be successful and we

provide programs and opportunities to facilitate student success.  Our minimal level of acceptable student performance is achieving "C" grades.  Please continue to monitor your

child's progress via Skyward Online system no less than once a week.

One of the greatest indicators of students success is parent involvement.

Your child needs you and so do we!!!

YOUR CHILD CAN GO TO COLLEGE FOR FREE!

Washington middle school students who dream of going to college but worry their families won’t be able to afford it, have a new promise from the state:  Work hard in school, keep your grades up, stay out of trouble, and a four-year scholarship may be yours.

The College Bound Scholarship offers an incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college to be an option because of the cost.  The scholarship covers college tuition, fees and books for students from low-income families who sign a pledge in 7th or 8th grade promising to graduate from high school and demonstrate good citizenship, and is guaranteed for students who meet the eligibility criteria.

8th grade students MUST apply by June 30th, 2009 while this year’s 7th graders will have until June 30th, 2010.    Please find out more and apply either online through the HECB website at:  www.hecb.wa.gov/collegebound, or by requesting an application from our school.

We appreciate your continued involvement with your son’s or daughter’s educational development as well as your careful monitoring of his/her friends and outside activities.  It is vital to know who your child is spending time with, texting, calling, and/or in contact with via e-mail, instant messaging, MySpace, Facebook, or any other social networking site.  It is equally important for you to know the parents of your son’s or daughter’s friends.  Although it is a time of individualization evidenced by your pre-teenager’s desire to keep you at arm’s length, there is no doubt that he/she still needs you to maintain clear and consistent boundaries and limitations.

We are now in our third and final trimester of this school year.  If your child has not passed at least two out of three trimesters in core classes (English, Math, Social Studies, and Science), we strongly recommend Summer School.  This year it will be held at Mountlake Terrace High School.  Middle School students may take up to two classes, each 1 ½ hours long, for one month.  Applications will be available in May.  The cost has yet to be finalized.

Did you know that our own public libraries offer services to help students complete their homework assignments?  Sno-Isle Libraries offer Live Homework Help, which provides real-time, on-line tutoring in English, Math, and Science.  It is available from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week.  Homework help in Spanish (en español) is available Sunday through Thursday, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. If you are interested contact www.sno-isle.org or call your local library.

Brier Library:  425 483 0888

Lynnwood Library:  425 778 2148

Mountlake Terrace Library:  425 776 8722

As always, please feel free to contact any of us with questions and/or concerns.  We’re here to serve you and your child.  We appreciate your support.

TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL

The momentum is quickening as we enter the last trimester of the year.  3rd trimester performance/grades are critical to a positive transition to high school.

Mountlake Terrace High School – the majority of our 8th grade students will attend MTHS.  The registration and course selection process is now completed.  Students will receive final schedules in August.  We will continue to work with MTHS counselors to ensure a smooth transition.

Lynnwood High School – Counselors have met with students who will attend LHS and each student has completed the registration/course selection process.  Excitement is building for the unveiling of the new school which will welcome all students in September!

Edmonds-Woodway High School – We have several students attending EWHS, mostly in the IB program.  Registration and course selection has now been completed.

Scriber Lake High SchoolScriber Lake High School offers an alternative approach to a high school program.  Counselors met with interested students last month.  They offer a unique, more personalized program, which can be essential for students who may not function as well in a traditional high school setting.  Scriber provides smaller classes, a small school environment, and more individualized attention and flexibility in programs.  Admission is by application only.  If interested, please contact Scriber at 425 431 7270 and plan to attend one of their informational meetings at 7:00 p.m. on April 8th, May 6th, June 3rd. or late in August.  If you have questions regarding the process, please call or e-mail me at lasky-finkd@edmonds.wednet.edu
